Meet McCarthy’s Intern: Dylan Miller
Tell us about your schooling.
I am a senior at York College of Pennsylvania. I have already completed all my courses so I am working on my third and final internship which is my last requirement before graduating. I will be graduating in May 2022 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.
Why did you want to pursue a degree in engineering?
Ever since I was young, I had an interest in architecture and an appreciation for the beauty in aesthetically pleasing buildings and structures. I am a mathematical person who loves problem solving so it was natural that I was drawn to the engineering field. The engineering program at York College is what made me love the college. Through my course work and my current internship my passion is now focused on site design and stormwater management.
Tell us about your previous internships.
I had two internships prior to interning for McCarthy Engineering. My first internship was with American Contracting and Environmental Services in Columbia, MD. My second internship was with Conewago Enterprises in Hanover, PA. My internship with American Contracting Environmental Services was hands on helping with day to day tasks on the construction site. My internship with Conewago Enterprises was during the pandemic and as you can imagine internships were very difficult to find during that period. I was so thankful to have had the opportunity to intern during COVID. During my second internship, I gained a lot of experience estimating.
Why did you want to intern at McCarthy Engineering?
I wanted to intern at McCarthy Engineering Associates because I haven’t worked on the consulting side of the engineering field at any of my prior internships. I also really enjoyed my interview and felt like it would be a great fit for me. I knew it would be a great environment to gain knowledge and hands on experience. Thus far it has been exactly what I thought and more! My experience at McCarthy Engineering is what has really steered my interests toward site design and stormwater design.
What are your expectations of the internship?
My expectations of this internship are to learn more about consulting and what that really entails. Prior to this internship, I only had experience on the contracting side of engineering. I plan on learning more about the planning and design side instead of the building side. I know I will gain a lot of experience from this internship due to the smaller size of the organization. It is more hands on and is giving me more experience than I ever had before. Since it is my third and final internship I am excited to dive in and be involved with numerous projects.
Fun fact…
When not working you will find me playing guitar. I play both electric and acoustic but I prefer playing my electric. I love playing jam band music with my friends. And if I am not playing guitar, I am outside hitting the trails on my mountain bike.
Meet McCarthy’s Intern: Michael Perkins
Tell us about your schooling.
I am a Junior at York College of Pennsylvania. I am studying to get my Civil Engineering degree and York College’s engineering program requires us to take three internships before we can graduate.
Why did you want to pursue a degree in engineering?
My interest in engineering began with my brother. He is four years older so I got to watch him go to college for motorsport engineering and instantly peaked my interest in the engineering field. Through his engineering degree he was able to get a job with the Indy Race Team HMD Motorsports. He travels around the country and uses his degree to check the vital signs of the race cars during the races. When my brother was applying to colleges, York College was one of the schools he applied to so this is how I heard of York. Their new engineering program combined with the small campus is what influenced my selection. The small size of the school makes me feel more like a “student” not just a part of the “student population.” It helps me focus and get more individual attention.
Is this your first internship?
This is not my first internship. Since my degree requires us to have three internships I had one prior internship before McCarthy Engineering. My first internship with Keith D. Smith Concrete in Hanover, PA and it was a great experience. I was in the field gaining hands on construction knowledge. With this internship, I am gaining hands on experience in the civil engineering side.
Why did you want to intern at McCarthy Engineering?
I really wanted to intern at McCarthy Engineering to gain more knowledge in the civil engineering field. Since it is my major, I wanted to get real hands on experience prior to entering into my course work. I also wanted to intern at McCarthy because the small size of the organization. The size allows me to work with everyone in the group and get to experience all aspects of the business. Living in Exeter is another great advantage since it is a local business close to home.
What are your expectations of the internship?
My expectations for this internship is to further the knowledge I have gained from the courses I have taken in college and prepare me for my future courses. My first internship taught me what I needed to know about being out in the field dealing with construction. So during this internship I expect to learn about the in-house side of civil engineering.
Fun fact…
I have played club lacrosse for York College since my freshman year. When on the field, you will see me sporting my favorite number 34. It is the number I have always worn in sports and it was my older brother’s number too. A bit of a family tradition!
