McCarthy Engineering Performs Emergency Road Repair Near Historic Mill

In Mid-February, Marion Township, Berks County was faced with having to unexpectedly close Hickory Road due to the collapse of an old steel culvert pipe that serves a historical mill on the private property. Hickory Road is a main artery through the community and required immediate repair. Township engineer McCarthy Engineering stepped up and facilitated pulling together Berks County Conservation District to secure funding for a new culvert and Construction Master Services to expedite the construction and replacement.

Particularly challenging was that the culvert feeds a historic mill building located very close to the roadway. It was important to the Township and Landowner to keep the historic architectural features and preserve the structural integrity of the historic mill. Through consultation with all parties, McCarthy Engineering designed a custom solution that satisfied everyone’s needs. Not only was McCarthy Engineering able to have the road reopened in less than 6 weeks, but also through some design modifications, was able to come in more than $3,200.00 dollars under budget.
